I’ve written an article about Caul and filmmaking for FilmCourage.com

The wonderful folk over at Film Courage asked me to write an article about my filmmaking experience and the story so far with Caul.

Head over to their site to check it out.

Run by David Branin and Karen Worden it’s a great site for filmmakers. Anyone who’s interested in working in this crazy industry should check it out. In their own words:

What started as a filmmaking blog has evolved into an indie empire. Film Courage has expanded with a monthly screening series at The Downtown Independent in Los Angeles. In a four-hour live event the last Monday of every month, The Film Courage Interactive showcases a couple short films, an independent feature, director’s Q & A, and caps off the night with a filmmaking discussion group where people share about the ups and downs of their pursuit, epiphanies on success, and more. Film Courage is more than just a radio show and monthly screening series. It’s a way of life for many artists. It’s about pursuing a passion, whether the rewards are monetary or emotional. We are glad that you have found us. We hope to have you become part of our family.

I’ve been following the progress of the ‘Marionette Unit’ for some time now , since seeing the trailor, I do hope this film reaches the complete stage soon and makes the festival circuit as well , eventually coming to DVD.
As far as the short film ‘Caul’ about a vampire based on a Polish folk tale, I know I am in the minority view point here, but , I think that all good horror films in particular vampire films should be shot in B&W film. I will not even bother going to see horror films that are shot in color, you just can’t capture the right atmosphere using color. As I said I’m sure that I am in the minority opinion here , and don’t think that this will in any way detour you from your intentions.

All the best to you in all your projects however,
    Sincerely ,
    Larry DeHaan

Hey Larry, thanks for the comment and for keeping up with my work. I really appreciate your support!

That’s an interesting point about shooting black and white. In fact it’s something that I’ve thought about for the film, but as we’re not yet in pre-production no decision has been made. One of my favourite films is Robert Wise’s ‘The Haunting’ which looks fantastic in black and white. I agree that horror movies in black and white really have a different quality and atmosphere to them. Did you see the black and white version of Frank Darabont’s ‘The Mist’? I really preferred that version to the colour one.
